It was the second Sunday of Amyâs stay in London, and it should have been Damienâs day off. The night before had been another late one â without her again â and he slept in most of the morning. She knew he was wiped out, but a small Susiâlike voice in her head was telling her that he might be less tired if he stopped going out on nights when he had to get up early for training.
She was just about to give up on him and go for a swim when he surfaced, looking rumpled and wonderful and smiling at her. âAmes, hiya, sorry I overslept! I canât believe weâve got the day together at last!â
âNeither can I,â Amy said warily. In fact, sheâd have to see it to believe it.
âIâve got so many plans for things we can do! Iâve made a booking for something right special to start with â a surprise, OK? And thenâ¦â
Damienâs enthusiasm was catching. Amy found herself smiling as she listened to him reeling off names of places and sights he wanted to see.
âPlus anywhere else you want to go. I donât even mind going shopping, if thatâs what you want, Ames.â He grinned, looking at his watch. âWow, itâs late! Weâd better get going!â
Both of them quickly had showers and got dressed. Amy threw on a fabulous new Chloé dress that Claudette had given her, insisting it wasnât her colour after all once sheâd bought it. She grabbed her H&M sandals, which matched perfectly, and looked on enviously as Damien slung on some Diesel jeans and a cotton shirt she knew heâd had for ages. She liked all this dressing up but sometimes it would be nice to wear her tracksuit outside the gates of Caseydene. Either way, Damien looked totally gorgeous and she gave him a quick kiss.
âYou look amazing,â he said, making her blush like one of his adoring fans.
Just as they were ready to leave the landline phone started ringing and Damien leant over to answer it.
Amy sighed. Her friends and family â and Damienâs too, as far as she knew â didnât use this number. They called each otherâs mobiles. This had to be someone like Big Carl, announcing extra training and cancelling their day again.
But for once it didnât sound like that. âSure. Yeah, sheâs here,â Damien said. He handed the receiver over to Amy.
âWho is it?â Amy mouthed.
Damien shrugged.
She spoke into the phone. âHello?â
âIs that Amy?â
âYes.â
âAmy Thornton?â
âYes.â
âOh, great! Hi, Amy! Iâm so glad I found the right number for you. Iâm calling from Just Gossip.â The voice was young, female and hurried. âHave you got time for a quick chat? Just a couple of questions. Shouldnât take more than a minute, I promise.â
âUh⦠OK, I suppose.â Amy looked at Damien, who was playing imaginary keepieâuppie by the door. Just Gossip was a bestselling magazine, so what harm could it do?
âWonderful! OK, Amy, weâre doing a short piece on footballersâ girlfriends and Iâm just checking some facts here, for my boss, you know.
