It was the second Sunday of Amy’s stay in London, and it should have been Damien’s day off. The night before had been another late one – without her again – and he slept in most of the morning. She knew he was wiped out, but a small Susi‐like voice in her head was telling her that he might be less tired if he stopped going out on nights when he had to get up early for training.

She was just about to give up on him and go for a swim when he surfaced, looking rumpled and wonderful and smiling at her. ‘Ames, hiya, sorry I overslept! I can’t believe we’ve got the day together at last!’

‘Neither can I,’ Amy said warily. In fact, she’d have to see it to believe it.

‘I’ve got so many plans for things we can do! I’ve made a booking for something right special to start with – a surprise, OK? And then…’

Damien’s enthusiasm was catching. Amy found herself smiling as she listened to him reeling off names of places and sights he wanted to see.

‘Plus anywhere else you want to go. I don’t even mind going shopping, if that’s what you want, Ames.’ He grinned, looking at his watch. ‘Wow, it’s late! We’d better get going!’

Both of them quickly had showers and got dressed. Amy threw on a fabulous new Chloé dress that Claudette had given her, insisting it wasn’t her colour after all once she’d bought it. She grabbed her H&M sandals, which matched perfectly, and looked on enviously as Damien slung on some Diesel jeans and a cotton shirt she knew he’d had for ages. She liked all this dressing up but sometimes it would be nice to wear her tracksuit outside the gates of Caseydene. Either way, Damien looked totally gorgeous and she gave him a quick kiss.

‘You look amazing,’ he said, making her blush like one of his adoring fans.

Just as they were ready to leave the landline phone started ringing and Damien leant over to answer it.

Amy sighed. Her friends and family – and Damien’s too, as far as she knew – didn’t use this number. They called each other’s mobiles. This had to be someone like Big Carl, announcing extra training and cancelling their day again.

But for once it didn’t sound like that. ‘Sure. Yeah, she’s here,’ Damien said. He handed the receiver over to Amy.

‘Who is it?’ Amy mouthed.

Damien shrugged.

She spoke into the phone. ‘Hello?’

‘Is that Amy?’

‘Yes.’

‘Amy Thornton?’

‘Yes.’

‘Oh, great! Hi, Amy! I’m so glad I found the right number for you. I’m calling from Just Gossip.’ The voice was young, female and hurried. ‘Have you got time for a quick chat? Just a couple of questions. Shouldn’t take more than a minute, I promise.’

‘Uh… OK, I suppose.’ Amy looked at Damien, who was playing imaginary keepie‐uppie by the door. Just Gossip was a bestselling magazine, so what harm could it do?

‘Wonderful! OK, Amy, we’re doing a short piece on footballers’ girlfriends and I’m just checking some facts here, for my boss, you know.
